The law protects members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, including members of the National Guard, as they enter military service (active duty), as well as commissioned officers of the Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration engaged in active service.

In my market (Marin County/SF Bay Area) the $400K you have saved is a down payment - leverage of some kind is almost always a necessity. 

Upon graduating from Maryville High school, I married my wife and enlisted into the the Marine Corps and served 8 years from 2008 to 2016.

Learn from the experience, and prosper from it.Unfortunately, you have to be like a Parris Island, Marine Drill Sargent with tenants, but without the yelling.

(I couldn't stand the heat in the Valley of to much sun... so I came back to Cali, for now, and Sonoma and Marin counties were a total "rat race..." so I am for now, in a town with minus 6000 people?)

Marine Corps brought us out to California 13 years ago for our first duty station; and we never left.  

A little about myself, I am a 8 year Marine Corps veteran (access to VA loans) and worked over-seas for a year.

As a former Marine, I find myself to be more risk-taking when I look at areas, but I do not know your temperament.
