If you hire want a better-looking lawn I would hire a lawn service to do fertilizing, weed spraying, and aeration.

Spraying it with a water bottle and scraping in off with a 6-8 inch blade (the type to spread drywall mud), it will come off easily. 

You are technically required to be licensed to spray chemicals.
