You want the foundation to go below the frost line because of the harsh winters (although this winter didn't seem to be so).I'd also focus on eco friendly, and cost effective appliances, mini splits, windows, etc.to help reduce the overall cost of operating.There is a shortage of housing upstate so any development is going to be a solid investment as long as you run the numbers and stick to the budget.Good luck!

Electricity costs are definitely high, but you can mitigate that by being as energy efficient as possible with mini-split systems or better insulation/windows if your budget allows. 

The major one was my mini fridge, which she said wasnt working, so I defrosted it for her, then few days later said it wasnt working again, I decided that same day just to buy her a new fridge.

I’m trying to determine how much and what it would take to go full glamping with a mini split and water heater and shower or if I go with a simple camp shower and composting toilet and maybe a small solar panel for a sting of lights and a place to charge phones. 

Five years from now it will be more so.I added a mini-split as part of a recent addition.  

With the 4 properties we manage in that area, I had a pipe bust in my mountain cabin, had a control board get hosed on a mini-split in a pool room due to the power outages, and PCB get fried in a multitude due to power outages.
