If all else fails and it gets damaged, it's possible to remove the damaged section and patch the floor carefully.Tile is a slightly different beast.

I had *contractor* come in to look at everything and he said that the wood by the kitchen sink as well as the wood in the front closet had water damage (maybe from wet shoes?)

We use the following rule of thumb - if it does not do permanent damage to the property, if it does not cause neighbors to complain and if it's not a legal issue - it's probably okay.
