It is clearly in their best interest to do nothing and hang onto their wallets.  

try some Muriatic acid ( wear goggles, rubber chemical gloves and a mask) you can find this at local hardware store or mason supply. this is used to clean brick. if you are inside, open windows and ventilate the room, this is some strong smelling stuff. just follow the directions on the container.

The only things I have found really useful and you may need when the  hardware store isn't open are locks,   a tarp/plastic sheeting , an extension cord ,  and an electric heater.  

There are also relatively inexpensive garage door hardware kits you can get to add a little more interest there if you wanted.  

Feel free to go, just dont' take your wallet with you.  

I am also considering adding hardware to the cabinets.

This is a small kitchen so I was thinking painting them white with brushed nickle hardware and a backsplash.
