That's a noble goal ... in that case, I'd just say go one at a time and don't drive yourself broke or insane to try to get there to give back to your community, because that wouldn't do either you or your community any good.

Similar to others, I would buy a duplex or triplex and live in one unit, start young(er), probably choose a higher paying job (I started as a school teacher: noble but small $).

While I think it may be noble for you to work for less money, I'm not sure as an investor I would want to work with a realtor who didn't feel they were worth market rates.
