Class action lawsuits might still be a practical solution to the problem, but, if the statute of limitations is not waived, there is no chance of combining the original cases as their time to file has run out.

If the rents and upkeep are really as unreasonable as you claim there should be other cheaper and better solutions nearby. 

There are often creative solutions when you get others involved who have experience or resources.It sounds like you’re determined, and with some outside-the-box thinking, you’ll find a way to make this happen.
