Goign to the free seminar, then the 1k seminar and then eventually paying the 20k for the "membership" focused my wife and I and pushed us in the REI direction. 

I expect to be able to hold on to this property for the foreseeable future and eventually cash flow it once we move. 

My intention is to grow an organic scaffold that can be of benefit to my community and I believe real estate investment will be my conduit for that eventuality.
