I remember a staple of discussions around the dinner table was the inevitable Baltimore/DC comparison (when DC was the murder capital of the US during Marion Barry's tenure as mayor and Baltimore was pretty far up there in violent crime).

I would say only to avoid the dinner timeframe - no one wants to talk to someone when their hungry or if they are enjoying dinner with family.
