We want to be traveling and sailing throughout the year, not just when a job allows me to use my 10 days of vacation.

We don’t do overseas rental units but recently have traveled in those countries and my brother bought in Italy and my son is based in Sicily.  

I’m not from the US and currently live in Europe most of the time.I’ve found some apartments that could work well for my needs—I plan to rent them out on Airbnb and reserve a few nights for myself when I travel there for work.My question is: apart from the purchase price (I’ve seen listings on Zillow averaging around $150k in areas like downtown Dallas, Old East, and Plano), what other costs should I expect—both during the acquisition and in monthly payments?

If I may, let me offer some tactical advice and then some unsolicited general advice.Tactical advice: marketing to traveling oil industry workers probably isn't radically different than what you have been doing to get your rooms filled with students.

I’m self managing myself but the tax side of it is a little confusing to me but I’m recording everything involved as far as maintenance, traveling, expenses etc. just want to know what some people would do in my situation or what to I can benefit from come tax season  @Angelo LlamasI recommend that you find a real estate accountant to help you understand and prepare your taxes.Bigger Pockets is a great place to find a real estate tax accountant. 

You make it so easy, you're so obvious, one need not travel further than the second sentence on your web page to find the first lie -- you may find yourself being accountable over silly practices and small dollars.

What some of my clients have done in the past is look for more creative rental avenues to be able to charge a premium on rent such as the traveling nursing niche like furnished finder. 

You will need to find partners, you will need to travel to where you wish to invest, you will need to understand the ins and outs of the business by being actively involved and treating it like a business and not some super passive investment.If you don't want to do that work I suggest you just put that 200k into some sort of diversified mutual fund that can make you 10+% on your money without any of the work of real estate.At the end of the day this is just my advice and I'm only a stranger on the internet.

Plans to were announced last month to invest $2B into the cities airport in anticipation of the population/business travel growth.
