For me at least they require concentration and thought and time to digest. 

Don't worry about that and concentrate on the things that most people don't know.

Currently, with your layoff situation, you have the opportunity to concentrate on market analysis, studying trends, rental needs, property values, and potential value growth.

The difference is you have the risk concentrated on a very small sample size.

Concentrating on growing your education & how to creatively purchase more cash flowing properties is the most valuable hours spent regularly. 

(They concentrate/force the equity into their class B shares 13/18 million so they get 72% of the future capital appreciation at the higher 30% cut, versus 5/18mil at the lower 20% rate) They also seem to be overpaying in this downward trending multi-family environment.

Now that I am getting more comfortable with the basics of this, I may park my money in a fund, but rest assured that I will give up the return profile and liquidity rights before I give up on the fundamentals of being first position in all notes, my preference for an unlevered, or lightly levered, fund, and requirement for conservative underwriting in concentrated Geographies. 

I want to scale with concentrating on cash flow.

But now you also have a free and clear property with equity concentrated.
