I took the skills I learned there (tile work was my specialty) and offered those skills at a discount to a local investor in exchange for learning how he found/negotiated deals. 

A client of mine had a house where a contractor tried to but $25/sq ft tile into her master bathroom.

Tile or laminate needs a pretty even surface.

but ONLY do that if you KNOW it’s to your benefit... they’ll notice if you’re hiding corian countertops and pretty new tile floors inside.

He has recommended tiling and price is on part with price of framing off window and all work involved with that.

The Inspector showed up after all the drywall, backsplash tile etc was in. 

The kitchen, master bath and laundry room have dark ceramic tile with built-in pits and fairly wide, dark grout.

Superior wall foundation, unstained oak floors, custom mill-work, custom transitional tile flooring in mudroom and butler's pantry.

Bot otherwise, it's generally not harmful unless disturbed.They also make concrete replacement tiles (widely available at Home Depot) that enable you to replace individual tiles that break.

If I have to hire a GC, I will - just trying to figure out how anyone does anything themselves (i.e hanging drywall, tiling, kitchen cabinets, fencing a yard, framing closets, etc) if the cost goes over 5K.
