I'm in South Loop near the Loop, lake, Grant Park, CTA, and a variety of hospitals / schools, so renting out the room on a mid-term basis (32+ days) for a premium was the best strategy for me.

@Kaleb Johnson Depending on where you are upstate you are not too far from the rust belt where prices would be comparable to the Mid-West. 

There’s no reason to go through a disaster (I'm mid recovery myself) and not get the financial upside by becoming the developer and selling a finished product versus raw land.If you have to completely rebuild, it’s a two year process at minimum.

We were able to fill one unit again, but the other has been vacant since mid September (over 3 months).

If that is the case, can you start to buy places that are built in the mid-90s to stay away from those big issues?
