If you do decide to help them out and rent continues to be late simply have a talk wiht them and remind them that rent helps pay your bills and since you did them a solid ask for the same in return.

When they see you post and not pay taxes, they'll come after you...and probably hit you with all kinds of cease and desist as well as back tax bills and penalties and interest and that won't be a fun place to be.
