. :-) One interesting thing I saw in Oakland was unpermitted duplex conversions of old Victorians.

Victorian, Second Empire, Edwardian), particularly those originally built as over/under duplexes or triplexes, will have subfloor assemblies comprised of two layers of boards (the top one may be tongue-and-groove) with a layer of plaster between them.  

Another option is to add it as a 4th bedroom (master suite) to the upper unit.Around here with all the old Second Empire and Victorian buildings converted into apartments, is common to turn the attic into living space.

I immediately found it interesting to read all sorts of details about what life was like in Victorian England (which was also the world of Sherlock Holmes, a series I read and enjoyed as a teenager).I began to read about the lifestyles of the gentry, the peerage and the royalty.

This no doubt began when, as a 5- or 6-year-old, I saw my great-grandparents' ornate Victorian farmhouse for the first time.
