Vacation rentals are a lot more work, but if you're in a high-demand area for tourists and can have high occupancy, you can make a lot of money. 

However, I think Covid-19 is putting extreme stress on some tourist towns like Bend since people are not using Airbnb rentals, service industry employees are some of the highest unemployed, etc. 

Our family has a summer home in Glen Arbor, and we've noticed growing demand in that area, due mostly to the National Lakeshore park as well as growing tourist franchises (CR, M22) with plans of expanding to more towns. 

The general idea--at least back in the day, was to connect with the local culture and friends network and get beneath the usual tourist level of interaction.

Augustine is a hot tourist spot.

Why in tourist areas do you restrict more people coming or larger groups?

Also if you want to invest, invest in Bali only as it's very tourist-friendly.

Location should be considered more like a hotel, meaning high tourist areas, business travel, proximity to events, highways, restaurants, etc.  

But in looking at Redfin, it appears that anything around the tourist-y area of Downtown is uber expensive.
