In a first position you don't pay other liens, generally, but you need a title search so ensure "super liens" tax, child support and court orders don't cloud title.

I have some emotional equity and a lot of financial investment in the home that may be clouding my business judgement.I do gain some tax benefits as I write off the mortgage and repairs but the home still costs me each year.

With as cheap as storage is these days, either locally on an external hard drive or even better in the cloud, there's not a big reason you can't keep the records for years.
