@Kristen Rolinski, I cannot speak for Chicago specifically, but I always send formal communications like this, security deposit returns, etc via certified mail, signature required. 

You can search online for companies that help you do this, or you can go directly to the State Corporation Commission (that's what it is in Virginia, anyway) website for instructions.I'm a big fan of formal company entities such as LLCs.
