good ideas above - some additonal tips :1) pay down / keep revolving balances below 30% of the max account limit ( eg. if card has a 10K limit - keep balance under 3K ) 2) if shopping for a mortgage or car - avoid letting multiple lenders pull your credit if possible as many inquiries in a short period arent a good thing ....if you knowwhat your score are - provide this information to the mortgage lender when requesting quotes ..if they cant provide you quotes with these scores - call another lender 3) try to keep a minimum of 3 accounts ( tradelines ) open and active , even if these accounts are small ...as having exisiting accounts with activity and good payment history will help establish / restablish credit history 4) if you are unaware of your credit scores / history - try to get a " tri- merge " report pulled as this accesses the 3 moan credit buraus and will allow you to see your credit and then be able to be aware of any issues so they can be worked on ....try doing this every 1-2 yrs ( or when you think there might be some sort of issue occuring )
