If we're talking concrete or clay pipe there should be breaks and wear in it simply from old age, water wear, ground shift, freeze/unfreeze.

desert areas as long as your HVAC is in tip top shape can be cheaper to own over time than homes in areas were it Snows.. and you have freeze thaw.

Since I posted this question I have done more research and I think I will take advantage of the time I have until January to pay as much as possible of my student loans without interest (I am able to do this because of the government freezing interests until January due to covid-19).

Typically water and freezing temperatures in unconditioned attics are a BAD combination so our HVAC contractor says to try and avoid putting them in unconditioned attics whenever possible.
