You are also assuming the ROTH IRA was never invented.Fourth, the error in your math is you are assuming a single yearly deposit and compounding yearly.And by the way, I agree, the 50 yr time span is probably not a fate our 20 year old would face if they set aside $50 a month.

I believe they typically do 1 or 2 year leases so even if they made everyone re-new their lease it would still end in a 1-2 year span
