Note that it is my impression the maintenance is lower due to factors such as no need for house electric, tenants shovel their own driveway and mow the lawn, more straightforward construction and usually better designed heating systems.

a developer by definition does not buy shovel ready lots for SFR contruction.. that would be a builder.a developer in the SFR realm creates the subdivision and sells lots to the builders or builds it out themselves.in the commercial world a developer will buy shovel ready and develop a commercial site.that's kind of how I view it.. its semantics for sure

Childhood - cut lawns, shoveled snow, baby-sat, cleaned and painted my mom's apt. houses, had a bait stand at the lake (to make gas money for the boat and water-skiing), lied about my age at 15 to get a cashier job for 30hrs/week in high school, had a full-time summer job and worked another 30 hrs all through college.
