It’s just my opinion, but I would encourage you to either start with something close enough to you so you can learn the process hands-on, or like the others said.. get boots on the ground that you trust, or go see Houston for yourself and learn the area you’re investing in.

We have NEVER purchased a home in our life, but because of the awesome advice and encouragement we find on the Bigger Pockets Podcast, we are excited to say that we are very focus on putting together the funding to purchase a duplex that needs a little TLC in the Metroplex.

I don’t have a pro membership so I need to be careful with my advice but I have a few things that might be encouraging.

I would encourage you to keep pursuing it in the way you are, the market it tough and good multifamily deals are hard to come by right now.

I try to bring a list of off-market properties and encourage others to do the same.  

I would encourage you to compare all the groups, then go with REI for peace of mind.
