If you see they have say, 8 different credit cards, 4 of which are for clothing stores with $2,500 balances on each, that should raise a red flag. 

You can find places to shower and wash clothes out in the sink for awhile. 

Whenever I run up against similar circumstances, I keep thinking of what Henry Kaiser said - “Problems are only opportunities in work clothes.”

They didn't violate the non smoking clause, but the stuff clings to their clothing and hair. 

Talk about their clothing or whatever you know.

They left in the middle of the night and left everything there except their clothes.  

I have a couple ideas though they are at the rough stage:- Small piece of cloth/rags from goodwill ("turn your beat up house from rags to cash")- Styrofoam out of a big box store dumpster ("House sitting on a flimsy foundation?")

Showing up in your work clothes helps. 

Drive crap cars, wear 2nd hand clothes.

If you're driving for dollars you really don't NEED anything as you're not making contact, just gathering info to send mailers (or sending them on the spot from your phone if using deal machine, maybe they'll give me a free month for the plug :p)In the back end: have a branding package developed, get business cards made, brand your clothing, get a website (I think this is a #1 priority), etc but all of this should take a back seat to activity, activity, activity.
