We don't do single stocks, we do index funds, so we feel very safe but not yet prosperous because it would take the top 500 companies in America to go bankrupt for us to lose our shorts.

If I buy a house every year for $70,000 and finance $50,000, I am spending more than I make each year however this is leading to prosperity.

We'll have to see though... both Lending Club and Prosper emerged during the economic recovery and there isn't good historical precedent for how they'll perform during harder times (unless you look at credit card paper, as you suggested).I use a service that automates loan selection, so it's a fully passive investment for me.

But in the long run, the stock market and real estate will continue to climb and make many of us prosperous. 

(honestly I think you can rinse and repeat for really any asset class)I Think having reserves, long term financing, and cash flow is the best way to make it thru if not even prosper in the next recession.
