You can always resurface a wood finish with out the sanding if all you're worried about are surface scratches and not gouges.

There is a special encapsulating coating for lead (Lead Block, for one), that's more like a liquid rubber, that can be used on certain surfaces only after the surfaces have been tested and the proper paperwork filed (the EPA loves it's paperwork).

The main concern in this case would be mold - does the water reach drywall or other surfaces that mold can grow on?
