The project can be done but I always like to start fresh, then you can add a contemporary car door size and entry door.

However, I really don't prefer the contemporary look.

Some have much less of a conscience than others and worship the all mighty dollar above all else.  

We are going for the contemporary look throughout the house but everyone tells me that a 300000$+ home should never have mdf in the kitchen.

Maybe my best advice would be to think: "contemporary durable".
