Recommendation letters would be fine as well, but personally, I think talking to them over the phone is more ideal as it's easier to get answers and just a better understanding of the tenant.

As an aside, the old management company (that I terminated a couple weeks ago) gave the tenant my personal cell phone number so I got a call from her yesterday which was awkward and highly unprofessional.
