Our property management company had a test for maintenance techs and it covered light electrical, plumbing,heating, repairs,and general trouble shooting.

A Nest warning alert in the winter costed the landlord $125 to trouble shoot finding out the battery was low.  

Part of this problem is that I reside out of state in California and had to basically run this renovation and troubleshoot problems with little help on the ground in Scottsdale (yikes what a nightmare) to deal with.We were finally able to obtain the license to operate as a care home in February (got delayed by some water plumbing maintenance issues). 

I'm currently an Engineer, and I know my way around electrical pretty well, along with troubleshooting various different types of equipment.

@Mindy Jensen I am having issues with my log-in to iPhone app since yesterday and tried to trouble shoot without any luck, checked and reset password, deleted the app and reinstalled. 

This is important when troubleshooting lists, as you can a) look at samples from your list to see if they are really what you want, and b) look at samples that were not included in your list, and see why they weren't included.Public records data is very messy, and varies from county to county, and even by year built, or other odder variations.

Once we started talking, the trouble shooting started happening immediately, and the final answer happened shortly after that.  

@James Miller I have a troubleshooting tips document I give to all my tenants at lease signing with all of those common things.

Well you do any troubleshooting like check the on switch or thermostat first?

Thankfully moving to the area in about 10 months so I would be able to troubleshoot these things on my own
