The silica allows this mastic to be used in a thicker layer than most ceramic tile adhesive.

What I've seen are a large, flexible pipe (like your downspout extenders, but thicker) with holes in it. 

I'd put in thicker sheathing plywood and do a thick luxury vinyl plank floor.

New electrical is better than real-old electrical with cloth insulation but not as good as 30-40 year old wiring with thicker copper wire and thicker plastic sheathing, so long as the sheathing isn't brittle.
