Partial rent to "compensate" for the sewer issue is not an optionThat's your angle...As soon as threats of lawsuits fly, then hire a lawyer and let them do their job...no more contact with them except through the lawyer.You aren't going to WIN this situation...best you can do it stem the $$ damage and move on...fix it and sell it off..... lesson learned

If you understand real estate as an asset class and can get better results for the IRA by having the IRA invest in real estate, then such an plan is superior to having 100% of your retirement savings in market-based assets.An IRA (self-directed or otherwise) is reasonably well protected from lawsuits that stem from you.

I can't imagine the neighbors have been paying property taxes on this entire lot or that the county would accept taxes for just a sliver.I'll admit I'm probably overly paranoid about this topic, stemming from the case in Boulder a few years ago where someone successfully took a slice of their neighbors property with adverse possession.
