I don't allow any pet in my apartments they are destructive especially cats they pee in closets and on floors, dogs scratch floors and chew on trim causing damage so it's not worth the clean up and repair.

Maybe a cult breaks into your attic every night and holds a black mass up there and as they sacrifice their third chicken they drop the Black Missal right over your head and wish you the worst...Or it maybe a rat pulling and chewing on the insulation of a loose cable up there and the thump is the sound when the rat pulls too hard and the tensioned cable comes free from its mouth and slaps into the ceiling drywall.
