As Frank Romine  said often you just need to clean out the holes around the burner with a pin on gas stoves, especially if its a bit greasy looking.

There actually was a REAL scam where some disheveled person would offer to "clean" your windshield while stopped at a traffic light; actually, they wiped windshields with greasy filthy rags that left a totally smudged and undriveable windshield.
