They broke the lease, if it matters whether it is a hamster or a pony it should be specified in the lease otherwise "no pets".

I wouldn't toss out a pet either, I might toss out the tenant, wouldn't even suggest they lose the pet (at least for dogs, cats or caged pets like a hamster, snakes are a different matter and that gets the tenant tossed!)

Same building had guinea pigs in another unit, I am not the biggest fan of that since they can escape and do damage or die somewhere you can't get to them, but less chance of that with those than with hamsters!
