Georgia doesn't have soil so much as it has a lot of clay and rock, so digging and waterproofing is rather an expensive pain in the butt!

That may be tough to do in our area where expansive soils can wreak havoc on below grade walls, but the thermal mass would really help.

This will reduce the risk of future movements except in extreme drought where all the soils shrink and pull away so much that the locally moist soils move out as well.If you do let the soils dry and and then call them out to re-shim, soak the crap out of the ground for a few days before they come out.
