Would you buy a used split unit HVAC?

I just found out that I have a fan motor and compressor problem with my two 29 year old HVAC units. I purchased the property a few years back and am grateful the units have lasted as long as they have.

The fan motors and compressors are not working as of today.

I have a quote for a new split unit at the price of $3937 for a Carrier 2 1/2 ton.

Would you put in a new or try to locate a used unit? Can you get a used split unit? Would you get a split unit or put in 2 used units, one per floor?

Any ideas of where to locate some good used units?

Thanks for your thoughts. mck

I've bought a few off Craigslist with mostly good results. As in $300-$500 for a 3 ton condenser. 8-12 years old. I even keep a spare. If you do go new, keep shopping around, prices really vary.
