My own feeling is that I'll have gained significantly more equity in my home if/when I sell, or if I end up paying the mortgage off early, I'll have pre-purchased flexibility for my future self to take a lower paying job or even a sabbatical because I'll no longer have the monthly mortgage to pay each month.
