If someone represents themselves as private lenders, check them on NMLS consumer access to see if they are licensed.

Also, check the local rental rules to make sure MTRs are allowed.

And here in Chicago I always check my favorite local homicide tracker whose name violates usage restrictions.Is there other favorite metrics out there that I am missing? 

But if someone else has something else gives more, it is worth checking out.
