Turns out the the electrical company was repairing a down line and once it was restored it sent a huge surge to the electrical panel.

For the cheaper house, I got the dining chairs from the Habitat for Humanity Restore and they are much better: no cushions, no crossbars to break, etc.

We are using up all of the $500 deductible from home insurance to cover water damage restoration.
