Batt insulation is only as good as your air sealing and old houses - at lease they way they were built here in the east - are notoriously hard to air seal {and you probably do not want to completely seal them as they were not designed to be that tight} While batt insulation is still extremely common here, the problem is once you have air movement your RSi/R value drops dramatically.
