Nobody really pushes the strategy of buying single family homes and paying them off (besides Chad Carson and a few others who are awesome), but 2-5 paid off single family homes are probably pretty life changing. 

If the numbers work and your life situation allows, rinsing and repeating every year is a great strategy with this type of house hacking. 

This is an exciting start of life-long journey I'm pursuing in real estate.

I guess nothing fully prepares you but life experience and the school of hard knocks!

Of course I am connecting with contractors in real life in my area, but also looking to leverage the experience of the Bigger Pockets community online.

My other side would say "If you want to control your life, pay the cost, take the risk, buy your own house and have two bathrooms" but that isn't nice, so I try to stick to my pleasant negotiator side. ;-)

Over the past year, I've had to make frequent calls and send numerous emails—sometimes daily to MNPMC's office and the managing partner to receive timely owner disbursements.

You get to talk to all age groups and walks of life.
