I've held rental property since 2008, but that was more out of necessity than it was a deliberate investment move.  

Most folks wander across quite innocently, but there are a few who deliberately try to tread along the edge.

@Brian Bradley you seem to be deliberately not focusing on  the most important piece of the statistics here: the death rate for swine flue. 17,000 out of 60,000,000 is a very low rate (1/1000 of 1%).

I think the main theme is to be more deliberate and disciplined in all areas.
