Joel Greenblatt's books, "The Little Book that Beats the Market" and "You Too Can Be A Stock Market Genius" are well worth reading (that second one has a terrible title -- it's actually a very nuts-and-bolts look at using "special situations" like spinoffs to identify undervalued stocks).
