We used that fireplace (wood burning) every single day of every winter we lived there, burning every kind of scrap wood you can think of from teak to pine to oak to ipe...you get the idea.

So far we've taken all the wood off the top (underside) of the porch and replaced it with tongue and grove pine and replaced the single ugly exterior light with 3 brushed steel pot lights attached to a dimmer.

Although I agree that the sub-floor should not be called hard wood, that yellow pine does look really good once it is sanded and finished.

But for something from around 1920, it may have already been refinished several times; I recently had 1920 vintage wood flooring refinished, and it does not look like there will be another sanding left ...One thing not yet mentioned is that 1920 vintage housing often used heart pine planks as the subfloor.
