I definitely see the benefits of owning rentals, but I'm having a hard time committing to that strategy because of the number of rentals required to generate enough cash flow to be FI.

this sounds like a credit issue that needs resolved before you can do a re-fi...you need to bring your score back up...not entirely sure about the circumstances, but if your desired re-fi is based on personal credit, you will need to repair your credit.

My suggestion is using remote locks that connect to the homes wi-fi and you can control the lock from anywhere in the world over the internet.
