I've seen engineers fresh out of school at little mom and pop organizations who were extremely sharp and more than capable of any job that they came across, and I've seen 30 year engineers at billion dollar companies who were almost completely incapable of performing any relevant task adequately so age, experience, size of company is often irrelevant.
