A bit late for me to pitch in, but the only way to do this (don't forget you may have to flush here and there) in cold weather is by wrapping the house and using heaters within the wrapping.

There are some steps you can take as a renter to decrease energy consumption such as heavy drapes, plastic seal kits you can use on windows, weather stripping.

My heart is in Cali (I plan on returning there real soon-can't say I like the cold weather) and wouldn't mind investing out there but in the meantime, I'm making the best of where I currently reside.I look forward to meeting people and networking as well as learning from everyone and making things happen.

Lot easier to maintain when you don't have to drive hour to get to the units(especially in this weather).

In any event it does sound like Hotel California at your places although having lived north of you in Pa I think the weather is a little different.

Other things to consider, besides hurricanes and tornadoes, would be places with extreme weather conditons - cold winters and hot summers.
