If you want to use the VA loan, I would just go ahead and do it in your personal name and just make sure you have a good insurance policy (the first line of defense). 

However, you may need to take that personal loan out 2-3 months ahead of time so that the loan money is received and in an account and seasoned.

IMO, building wealth via SFR vehicle is hard work, in a highly competitive environment.  

Likely if you can gross enough and have a buffer you should come out ahead in the end.
