California also recently eased restrictions on accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and junior ADUs.

Some places will call this an accessory dwelling unit- a separate 2  bedroom/1 bathroom unit at the back of the property, not attached to the house.

Why don't you make some of the home improvements yourself, line up an awesome (but budget) vacation, and see if you can't get her some great deals on the accessories she wants.Finally, why not demonstrate WHY you want to invest - as in hey honey we won't have to go to work, junior can go to college for free, and we can travel year round in just X years if we make these basic changes.. you may actually be able to sway her to your line of thinking if you can paint a clear vision.

If that's the case for you, I would check to see if your town has an ordinance allowing accessory apartments.

I am considering making an offer on a property in Atlanta zoned as single family with an accessory dwelling unit (basement unit with private entrance).

That means you can buy a home with a main floor and basement, convert the basement and if there is enough space build out an accessory dwelling unit (ADU).

@Jonathan Feliciano Something to look into as an option is if your jurisdiction allows accessory dwelling units or ADU's in your zone.
