If I have an issue I'm trying to work out, I'll grab the associated books from my many piles and shelves full, read a little of each searching for an answer and that seems to work just as well, if not better than trying to read a whole book all the way through.

For instance my first meeting I went and talked to a few guys around my age and after joking a bit asked them if they wanted to grab drinks sometime on me.

My suggestion is grab one and detail every aspect of the process (budget, repairs, problems etc).  

If so, that's confusing, considering I didn't grab any "newbies."

You might consider bailing while the bailing is good, grab your 20K and move on. 

About an hour ago i got kicked out of my house for reasons i would not like to get into, the only things i grabbed was some clothes my laptop and skateboard.
